Department of History

 A historical landmark was made in 1980 with the establishment of Cauvery College, Virajpet. It also witnessed the inception of the Department of History. Today the department has completed 43 years of its journey on the road of progress and accomplishment.
 History is the power house of information. It records the events, happenings and challenges of humankind in its totality, unmindful of space and time. The course tries to keep in mind the three important aims of higher education- Innovation, Learning, Research and Comparative study.
 The department of history has educated thousands of graduates who have made their mark in society. The department of history offers Four year B.A degree (NEP) course covering, the history of India (Ancient, Medieval, Modern) the students are given an opportunity to study the regional history of Karnataka also.

 The department offers the following subjects
1. India in early historical period (to AD.300)
2. India in early medial period (AD.300-1300)
3. Medial India (AD.206-1556)
4. Early Modern India (AD.1605-1856)
5. Colonial India (AD.1856-1885)
6. History of Europe (AD.1789-1990)
7. History of Karnataka (AD.1565-1956)
8. Making of Indian Nation (AD.1885-1947)
9. Cultural history of Karnataka (AD1100- AD1170)
 Beyond the classroom initiative and experimental learning module has been initiated through field study and field visit to places of historical significance inculcating sense of pride in our cultural heritage and motivating students to explore new areas of learning.

OBJECTIVES:
History aims at helping students to understand the present existing social, political, religious and economic conditions of the people.
Understand the methods of historical enquiry, includinghow evidence is used rigorously to make historical claims and discern how and why contrasting arguments and interpretations of the past have been constructed. The Department develops in students the ability to understand the present, in the light of the past and strengthen critical thinking. To develop knowledge and skills that will strengthen their quest for knowledge.

MISSON:
 The History department prepares students for wide range of career options. The study of society, cultures and Economics across a broad chronological and Geographical spectrum is highlighted.

VISION:
The History department seeks to build its students’ employment ability and intellectual curiosity along with raising public awareness and service activities conducted locally, state wide, regionally, nationally and internationally.
To mould students into confident individuals and prepare them to pursue post graduate studies.
